Sleep Disturbances: is it a pattern or disease?

Each of us has our own natural rhythm – some are early risers while others are night owls. These individual differences are normal and often shaped from childhood. However, sleep remains one of the most essential parts of our daily routine as it allows the body to repair and restore itself. When sleep is disrupted, it can affect not only physical health but also emotional and mental well-being.

The most common sleep difficulty is insomnia, where individuals struggle to fall asleep or wake up much earlier than intended. On the other end of the spectrum, hypersomnia involves sleeping excessively, often leading to daytime drowsiness and interference with work, social, and personal life. Other factors such as irregular work schedules, frequent travel across time zones (jet lag), and breathing-related issues can also disturb normal sleep patterns.

Psychological conditions like depression, anxiety, obsessive thoughts, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) also contribute to sleep disturbances. For example, clients with PTSD often experience recurring flashbacks of trauma, which interfere with restful sleep. In children, sleep issues may appear in the form of sleep-talking or sleepwalking.

Psychological support focuses on addressing both the causes and the symptoms of sleep-related concerns. Techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) help challenge distorted fears and obsessive thoughts, while mindfulness practices assist clients in calming their minds and reconnecting with their senses. In addition, methods like breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery can be introduced to improve sleep hygiene and relaxation.

Therapy also helps establish healthier sleep routines through tools like sleep logs and bedtime rituals. Just as proper nutrition is vital for the body, so is proper regulation of sleep. Prolonged sleep disruption can impact biological functions such as blood pressure and sugar levels, making it important not to ignore these concerns.
