Depression can feel like being trapped in a dark, heavy phase of life. It often begins with overwhelming drowsiness, frequent crying, and a deep sense of emptiness. Even intelligence or creativity may not seem beneficial when the mind is clouded with constant automatic thoughts like “I’m not loved,” “I’m not good enough,” or “Maybe life isn’t worth living.” This self-critical inner voice fuels feelings of rejection, shame, and hopelessness – keeping individuals stuck in the negativity cycle.

Loss of focus, lack of motivation, and loss of interest in activities that once brought joy such as exercise, art, or music are common. Even basic daily tasks like eating, sleeping, or speaking with others may feel exhausting. Over time, it becomes harder to maintain a “happy mask,” leading to withdrawal and isolation. The body becomes sensitive to noise and the world can start to feel overwhelming and chaotic.

One of the most painful aspects of depression is that it lingers, it doesn’t fade away even during moments that should feel happy. People often hear advice to “snap out of it” or “just distract yourself,” but the reality is far more complex. The inability to control these thoughts can create a heavy burden of shame and embarrassment, which in turn prevents many from reaching out for professional help.

Through therapy, individuals learn strategies to manage and eventually overcome it. Psychologists use structured techniques like cognitive restructuring, journaling, reframing, and guided imagery to challenge and reduce negative thought patterns. Behavioral methods, including muscle relaxation and activity scheduling, can help restore both physical and mental energy. Most importantly, therapy provides a safe space to release pent-up emotions, with empathy and compassion forming the foundation of the therapeutic relationship.
